The Wellington Phoenix were hosting Melbourne City on Easter Sunday at Westpac Stadium and with quite a few of us in food comas (with a lot of chocolate thrown in for good measure) it was a great time for some Sunday evening football.
The Nix seemed to start off the stronger of the two sides, but City were beginning to find their mojo when Roy Krishna found he back of the net in the 27th minute. Keeper Eugene Galekovic came out of his box, and Roy just lifted the ball over Eugene to send it into the back of the net
It was Roy with his 16th goal of the season also equalling Jeremy Brockie’s club record for the Welling Phoenix. However, the visitors were enjoying a lot of possession and after a bit of pinball in the box McGree finally slot it past Kurto
1-1 in the 42nd minute.
It was an entertaining first half with City having most of the possession but the Nix looked to be happy soaking up the pressure and playing on the counter.
The second half saw City enjoying all the possession in the first few minutes but the Krishna was at it again…
This time in the 50th minute, giving Krishna a brace – surpassing Brockie and his 17th goal in Nix colours but also netting his 49th league goal! It was a cheeky little goal just outside the box through a bunch of defenders with Galekovic no chance!
It wasn’t all smooth sailing when Kurto made another super save to deny Harrison, in the 56th minute!
The 64th minute however, saw Harrison fall into the box looking for a penalty (or maybe he was out looking for some Easter eggs) but instead gets booked for a dive! Durante wasn’t having it, giving him an earful too!
The 66th saw McGree join the party with a brace and drawing City level.
2-2! A beautiful hit, first touch hitting away from the goal but in the far corner. My goodness what a goal! In the 76th minute Harrison sent a rocket toward goal of a free – smashed the crossbar. And how did that not go in?! Maybe some Easter magic for the Nix
It was going to be a race to the finish line with City stringing together a fair few passes heading forward but the Phoenix also looking likely to score on the counter.
The fourth official signalled 5 minutes of stoppage time!
Who will blink first?
It was Burgess in the 90+ 3 with a stunning header but Galekovic knocked it out for a corner!
90+ 4 saw goal mouth scramble and who else but Krishna with a hat trick! Now in top spot for the race for the Alex Tobin and a 3-2 lead for the Nix! His 50th league goal too!
Surely that seals it for the Nix?
And it does!
What a game, and Happy Easter indeed to those Nix fans who are celebrating today.
